Examinations and Cleans

Many people wonder if making it to their twice yearly dental appointment is really necessary.

The short answer is – yes.

Good preventive care helps reduce your risk for certain illnesses and can help you achieve and maintain the level of excellent oral health that helps you look and feel your best.

Your Dental Check-Up: What to Expect

Stay on Top of Your Oral Health
Your twice-yearly dental visit is the perfect time to discuss any discomfort, changes, or concerns you’ve noticed in your mouth. To ensure the best care, be ready to share a full medical history and bring a list of any medications you’re currently taking.

Understanding your overall health helps your dentist provide more tailored care. Oral health is closely linked to general health — for instance, gum disease has been associated with heart conditions, diabetes, and even low birth weight in newborns.

Comprehensive Examinations

Early Detection is Key
Some dental conditions show subtle signs that only a trained professional can detect. During your exam, your dentist will carefully assess your entire mouth — including teeth, gums, soft tissues, and your bite.

You may also undergo x-rays or other diagnostic tests to identify issues such as decay, infection, or early signs of periodontal disease. By catching problems early, treatment can be simpler and more effective.

Professional Clean and Polish

A Deep Clean for a Healthier Smile
Your visit includes a thorough professional clean to remove stubborn plaque and tartar from areas that are hard to reach at home. Your dental team may also provide tips to enhance your brushing and flossing routine, helping you maintain great oral hygiene between visits.

A professional clean doesn’t just support oral health — it also leaves your smile looking bright and refreshed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Even with excellent hygiene habits, it's easy to miss small areas of your teeth. Over time, the missed plaque will harden into tartar, which can only be removed with a dentist's tools. When tartar accumulates beneath the gumline, the end result is red, puffy, inflamed gums — the beginnings of periodontal disease.

How Mouth Bacteria Might Affect Your Brain Health

Research has found that the bacteria in your mouth could be linked to how your brain functions as you age. A recent study by the University of Exeter suggests that certain types of mouth bacteria may improve memory and focus, while others could increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease.

The research indicates two methods how bacteria may affect brain health. Firstly, harmful bacteria can enter the bloodstream and possibly damage the brain. Second, an imbalance between good and bad bacteria can lower the body’s ability to convert nitrates (found in vegetables) ...
